The Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority (MAGLA), in partnership with Mzuzu Viphya Lions Club, conducted a free community health outreach programme at Rumphi Boma, providing eyesight and diabetes screening services to residents as part of efforts to promote early detection and treatment of common health conditions.
The initiative attracted community members from across the district, offering accessible health checks aimed at encouraging preventative healthcare and improving awareness of conditions that can often go undiagnosed until they become more serious. The health screening exercise was held alongside the donation of assorted items to St. Magdalena Centre for Children with Disabilities, reflecting the partners’ broader commitment to community welfare and social responsibility.
Speaking during the event, Mzuzu Viphya Lions Club President Richard Luhanga said the donation would help improve the wellbeing and daily lives of the children supported by the center. He emphasized the importance of collaborative initiatives that address both healthcare needs and support for vulnerable groups within society.
Sister-in-Charge Clementina Mwale welcomed the donation, describing it as timely and greatly needed. She noted that the center continues to face increasing demand for its services and appealed for additional support from organizations, stakeholders, and well-wishers to help expand its capacity and enhance the quality of care provided to children living with disabilities.
MAGLA said the initiative aligns with its commitment to supporting community development programmes that create positive social impact beyond its regulatory mandate. Through partnerships with local organizations and community groups, the authority continues to contribute to initiatives focused on health, education, and social welfare.
The outreach programme highlights the value of public-private collaboration in addressing community needs, while reinforcing the importance of early health screening and sustained support for institutions that care for vulnerable members of society.
