Hulu Sport, one of Ethiopia’s leading sports betting operators, has secured a legal victory after the Federal High Court overturned the National Lottery Administration’s decision to suspend the company’s operations.
The court ruled that the regulator’s action was legally flawed, marking a significant development in the ongoing dispute between the betting operator and the government authority.
The judgment represents an important affirmation of judicial oversight over administrative decisions, with the court determining that the suspension did not meet the legal requirements governing regulatory enforcement.
Despite the favorable ruling, Hulu Sport has not been permitted to resume its operations. Shortly after the court’s decision, the National Lottery Administration filed an appeal and obtained a temporary stay of execution, effectively suspending the implementation of the judgment until the appellate court reaches a final decision.
As a result, the company remains unable to reopen its business, creating an unusual legal situation in which a company that prevailed in court continues to face operational restrictions while the appeals process is underway.
The case is expected to be closely watched by businesses, legal professionals, and investors, as its outcome could shape future interpretations of regulatory authority and administrative due process in Ethiopia’s gaming and betting industry. It also highlights the importance of balancing effective government oversight with the legal rights of licensed businesses.
Until the appellate court issues its final ruling, Hulu Sport’s operations will remain on hold, leaving the company and its customers awaiting clarity on the future of one of Ethiopia’s prominent sports betting platforms.
