Brazil’s Attorney General’s Office (AGU) has filed a lawsuit against 17 betting companies, seeking at least BRL1 billion in collective moral damages and reimbursement for costs incurred by the country’s public healthcare system.
The AGU estimates that betting-related costs to Brazil’s Unified Health System (SUS) could reach approximately BRL2.6 billion. However, the final amount will be determined during the legal proceedings.
Betting Companies Named in Lawsuit
The lawsuit targets companies operating several major betting brands, including Betano, bet365, Superbet, Sportingbet, Betfair and KTO Group.
According to the Brazilian government, the companies named in the case collectively account for around 80% of Brazil’s regulated betting market. The government is seeking compensation for alleged social and public health costs associated with gambling. The case could have significant implications for betting operators operating in Brazil’s regulated market.
Government Steps Up Betting Crackdown
The lawsuit comes as the Brazilian government increases its scrutiny of the betting industry.
Authorities have introduced a series of measures aimed at strengthening oversight of betting activities and addressing concerns surrounding gambling-related harm and its impact on public services.
The latest legal action follows a provisional measure announced the previous week concerning licensed betting operations in Brazil. The government’s approach reflects growing attention on the relationship between the expansion of online betting and potential costs to public health services.
Impact on Brazil’s Betting Market
The lawsuit represents another significant development for Brazil’s rapidly changing betting industry.
As legal and regulatory measures continue to evolve, operators face increased scrutiny over their responsibilities and the wider social impact of gambling. The AGU’s claim will now proceed through the courts, where the parties involved will have an opportunity to present their arguments and evidence.
The final amount of any compensation will depend on the outcome of the proceedings and the court’s assessment of the claims made by the government.
