The Zambia Gaming Association (ZGA) has raised concerns over the social and financial consequences of irresponsible gambling, warning that excessive betting can have serious effects on individuals, families and communities.
ZGA Secretary General Darius Sinkamba urged members of the public to approach gambling responsibly, noting that while betting may be viewed as entertainment by some people, excessive gambling can lead to significant financial and social harm.
Sinkamba also highlighted concerns about the potential impact of gambling on family relationships and individual well-being, including cases where gambling-related losses have contributed to severe consequences.
Another area of concern is underage gambling, particularly as the growth of online betting has made gambling platforms increasingly accessible through smartphones.
Zambian law prohibits people under the age of 18 from participating in betting activities. However, the increased availability of online betting presents additional challenges for preventing minors from accessing gambling services, particularly where children may use smartphones and funds provided by their parents or guardians.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified several forms of gambling-related harm, including financial difficulties, family problems, mental health challenges, neglect of children and the diversion of money from essential needs such as food, housing, healthcare and education.
The concerns highlight that the consequences of gambling-related harm can extend beyond the amount spent on individual bets. For affected individuals and families, gambling losses can reduce the resources available for essential household needs and financial responsibilities.
The Zambia Gaming Association is therefore encouraging greater awareness of responsible gambling practices and continued efforts to protect minors from accessing gambling services, particularly within the rapidly expanding online betting environment.
