Tanzania’s gambling sector generated TZS 307.8 billion in tax revenue during the 2025/26 financial year, according to James Mbalwe, Director General of the Gaming Board of Tanzania (GBT).
Mbalwe said growth in the sector has been driven in part by greater digital participation, mobile betting and the expansion of online gaming platforms. Wider access to smartphones and digital payment services has changed how Tanzanians use gambling products, he said.
Online sports betting and casino platforms are playing an increasingly prominent role, with more players choosing digital services over traditional betting outlets. Mbalwe also pointed to Tanzania’s young population and growing interest in digital entertainment as factors reshaping the industry’s revenue mix.
The rapid growth of online gambling has also brought regulatory challenges, including illegal gaming machines, unlicensed betting websites and gaps in player protection.
The GBT is working with the Police Cybersecurity Bureau and the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) to strengthen enforcement, target illegal operators and improve oversight of digital gambling.
Mbalwe said changes in Tanzania’s regulatory and economic environment are creating opportunities for private investment in the gaming industry. Gambling businesses are open to both local and international investors, while the national lottery remains government-owned and privately managed.
The latest revenue figures highlight the sector’s growing contribution to public finances as Tanzania seeks to expand its digital market, attract investment and strengthen regulation.
