Opera and Safaricom Expand Free Data in Ethiopia

Global web innovator, Opera, has joined forces with Safaricom to offer free data access in Ethiopia, as part of its ongoing commitment to expand internet accessibility throughout Africa.

Opera’s Free Data campaign, initiated in 2017 for African consumers, has seen the company invest over $100 million in the region to enhance internet access and provide a fast and reliable connection.

Opera has already enabled nearly 40 million people in five countries to enjoy up to 3 GB of free monthly browsing through partnerships with local telecommunications companies.

This initiative has played a pivotal role in helping users establish businesses, connect with loved ones, and pursue educational opportunities with greater ease and affordability.

In Kenya, Opera has contributed over $12 million to free data campaigns over the past three years, illustrating its dedication to bridging the digital divide.

Jørgen Arnesen, Executive VP Mobile at Opera, expressed optimism about Ethiopia’s potential for growth, noting that the country’s internet penetration rate stands at only around 16.7 percent.

He stated, “We’re excited to join forces with long-time partner Safaricom to help expand Ethiopia’s digital economy.

In the past, our collaboration provided a first window to the web for many users in Kenya, and we’re proud to work together to bring millions of new users online in Ethiopia.”

Under this campaign, Opera users in Ethiopia will be able to enjoy up to 50 MB of free daily browsing when using Opera Mini or Opera for Android on the Safaricom network.

It’s important to note that this offer excludes video streaming and file downloads and is valid for the latest versions of Opera Mini and Opera for Android.
