After more than two years in an acting role, Maritza Mostert has been officially appointed as the Surveillance & Security Manager of Flamingo Casino in Kimberley. She is the first woman to hold this position at the property.
Mostert began her career at Flamingo in December 2003. Reflecting on her journey, she says, “What a journey it has been and continues to be. I have a deep love for the gaming industry, the people within it, and the ever-evolving challenges that come with it.”
The role of Surveillance & Security Manager has traditionally been male dominated. Mostert believes that modern women are fully capable of meeting these challenges. “Coming from a background as an Investigations Manager, I have gained valuable knowledge, skills, and experience that allow me to add meaningful value to my current role, my department, and the business as a whole,” she explains.
Just before her appointment, Mostert completed training in:
- Knowledge of the Firearms Control Act
- Handling and use of a handgun
- Handling and use of a self-loading rifle or carbine
- Handling and use of a manually operated rifle or carbine
- Handling and use of a shotgun
Mostert now leads a team of 29 employees, including 11 surveillance team members and 18 security team members. She is responsible for managing surveillance, compliance, and security operations while ensuring strict alignment with gaming regulations and company standards. This role carries significant responsibility, as mismanagement can lead to serious consequences.
“Surveillance and security are critical in mitigating risks and protecting guests, staff, and property from internal and external threats,” says Mostert. She emphasizes that women are increasingly stepping into leadership roles in corporate settings.
Mostert has strong advice for women looking to pursue their goals: “Don’t let anyone—men, opinions, or history dictate your future. You are in control. Set your goals, achieve your objectives, and remember that even the sky is not the limit. I believe in women empowerment and developing the next generation of female leaders. Women bring unique energy to the workplace, and staying connected to your team enhances performance and morale.”
When asked for self-defense advice, Mostert stresses the importance of awareness and self-confidence. She encourages women to be mindful of their surroundings, understand their environment, and set clear personal boundaries. “It’s essential to stay alert and trust your instincts. The mindset of ‘it could never happen to me’ is not helpful,” she advises. “Empower yourself, know your worth, and take ownership of your personal safety.”
Maritza has been happily married for 12 years to her husband, Johannes, whom she lovingly nicknames “Mossie.” They enjoy riding super bikes together and have chosen not to have children. Instead, they are proud “paw parents” to their bull terrier, Lilo. In her downtime, Mostert loves curling up with a Stephen King novel. “Music is my daily medication,” she adds, noting that those who know her often say, “What you see is what you get.”
