The Minister of Industrialization, Business, Trade and Tourism, George Partridge, has commended the Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority (MAGLA) for its proactive leadership in promoting the responsible growth of the gaming in Malawi while safeguarding young people and strengthening investor confidence.
The Minister made the remarks during a strategic engagement with MAGLA management, which included a familiarization tour aimed at enhancing his understanding of the Authority’s operations, regulatory mandate, and strategic priorities.
Speaking during the meeting, Minister Partridge highlighted MAGLA’s commitment to balancing revenue generation, tourism development, and social responsibility. He noted that a well-regulated gambling sector can play a meaningful role in national economic growth.
“Gambling is an experience for both local and international consumers. It complements our tourism offerings, attracts more visitors, and increases spending, which ultimately benefits government through enhanced revenue,” said Partridge.
He further applauded MAGLA for its deliberate efforts to address the social risks associated with gambling, particularly in protecting children and vulnerable groups. “As a regulator, one of the key challenges is mitigating the negative effects of gambling on society, especially among young people. We are encouraged by the seriousness with which MAGLA is addressing this issue,” he added.
The Minister also acknowledged operational challenges faced by the Authority, including inadequate office infrastructure, noting that government is aware of these constraints and their impact on service delivery. “Operating from scattered, converted residential spaces presents administrative challenges. These are valid concerns that government has taken note of,” he said.
MAGLA Director General Rachel Mijiga described the Minister’s visit as a strong demonstration of government support for the gaming industry. “We appreciate the Minister’s visit and the strategic guidance he has provided, particularly in advancing responsible gambling and sustainable sector growth,” said Mijiga.
She revealed that MAGLA is actively engaging betting operators regarding the recently introduced betting tax and is collaborating with the Ministry of Finance and other stakeholders to ensure a balanced outcome. “Our goal is to achieve a win-win situation that benefits government, investors, and the people of Malawi,” she stated.
Mijiga announced that MAGLA is projecting 60 percent growth in the gaming sector in the upcoming financial year and plans to strengthen responsible gambling initiatives. “We will collaborate with responsible gambling partners and work closely with parents, guardians, and educational institutions to prevent underage gambling,” she said.
She also emphasized the critical role of the media in raising public awareness and shaping responsible behavior. “The media are key partners in influencing public perception and helping us reach young people and the broader population with important messages on responsible gambling,” Mijiga added.
