Trade and Industry, Minister Parks Tau stated on Tuesday that he confidently fulfilled his responsibilities in awarding the fourth Lottery operator license to Sizekhaya.
During a briefing with the portfolio committee, Tau explained that the appointment process for the national lotteries operator involves multiple steps to ensure necessary checks and balances.
“When I became minister last year, I inherited the process of awarding this fourth national lotteries operator license after extending Ithuba Holdings’ license for two years,” he said. “The request for proposals was issued, and we received eight applications. The evaluation committee is currently working on the evaluation.”
He highlighted that the bidding process was highly competitive and involved well-resourced applicants. Tau noted that the second and fourth operator licenses faced legal challenges, and the fourth is proving to be similar.
“There is no doubt my every word today will be scrutinized for any grounds a party might use for a legal challenge,” he added.
As the minister overseeing the National Lotteries Commission and the licensing process, Tau emphasized the importance of ensuring fairness throughout the process. “I confidently discharged my responsibilities to the best of my abilities,” he said.
Tau acknowledged that awarding the license was not easy and that he faced criticism for delaying the announcement. “I accept the delay was unfortunate. However, I was confronted with the choice to rush the decision or conduct further investigations. I chose the latter to ensure I fulfilled my duty in accordance with the law,” he explained.
“I can confidently assure the country that I applied my mind properly to arrive at what I believe is the best result. While others may disagree, I stand by my commitment to the Lotteries Act,” Tau concluded.
