The Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority (MAGLA) has supported efforts to improve learning conditions for pupils and teachers at Mpatsa Primary School in Nsanje District following the destruction of the school by Cyclone Freddy in March 2023.

The cyclone severely affected the school, leaving more than 2,600 learners facing challenging learning conditions. Since the disaster, some pupils have been attending classes in temporary shelters, while others have been forced to learn under trees.

To address the situation, MAGLA has purchased land to facilitate the relocation and construction of Mpatsa Primary School, alongside a Teacher Development Center (TDC). The investment is intended to provide learners and teachers with a safer and more conducive environment while supporting access to quality education in the community.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, MAGLA Director General Muchanankhwaye Mpuluka reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to supporting initiatives that contribute to community development and improve the well-being of people across Malawi.

“Children deserve to learn in an environment that is safe, dignified and conducive for their development,” Mpuluka said.

The initiative forms part of MAGLA’s broader social development efforts through the Gaming and Lotteries Fund, which supports projects aimed at creating meaningful and sustainable benefits for communities across Malawi.

MAGLA said it remains committed to supporting initiatives that contribute to education, community development and improved quality of life across the country.
