As South Africans continue to grapple with rising living costs and tighter household budgets, discretionary spending is coming under increasing pressure. Against this backdrop, Sun International has launched its Casino Lite project, a cost-cutting and restructuring initiative aimed at streamlining operations and improving profitability.

The move has also resulted in retrenchment consultations, with some employees facing the prospect of losing their jobs. Sun International owns and manages a portfolio of casino, resort, hotel, and digital gaming brands across South Africa. Its flagship property is Sun City, located in the North West province.

Sun International’s interim results for the six months ended 30 June 2026 revealed that the group has already begun formal retrenchment consultations. The Casino Lite project is focused on improving profitability at the group’s smaller, under-performing properties by reducing operating costs and improving efficiency.

“During the period, the group implemented a low-cost gaming and operating model to improve profitability at smaller, under-performing properties,” Sun International said.

The initiative focuses on improving adjusted EBITDA and operating margins through the optimization of gaming operations, increasing revenue by insourcing food and beverage outlets, and implementing cost-saving measures, including workforce rightsizing and productivity improvements.

Sun International said the Casino Lite project and other productivity initiatives will result in some job losses. However, the group said it would seek to redeploy affected employees to other areas of the business where possible.

“Following the implementation of the Casino Lite project and productivity initiatives to centralize certain functions, the group has embarked on a formal consultation process in terms of section 189A of the Labor Relations Act,” the company said.

Management added that it would continue engaging with employees throughout the process to ensure it is conducted fairly and transparently. The group did not disclose the number of employees affected by the retrenchments.

However, it previously confirmed to Moneyweb that the properties affected are Golden Valley in Worcester, Meropa in Polokwane, Windmill in Bloemfontein, and Flamingo in Kimberley.

The four properties are Sun International’s smallest casinos. While Sun International is restructuring parts of its land-based casino operations, its online gambling platform, Sunbet, continued to record strong growth during the period. According to the financial results, Sunbet income increased by 35.5% to R1.2 billion, supported by a 32.3% increase in unique active player days and a 17.5% rise in first-time depositors.

The group also made further progress in enhancing customer engagement and sportsbook functionality, with improvements implemented during the first half of the year. Sun International said Sunbet is expected to benefit from its new customer-facing interface, which launched in South Africa in August and Botswana in July 2026.

Despite broader weakness in the market, Sun International’s land-based casino portfolio increased its market share by 2.3 percentage points to 49.0%. Income from the portfolio rose by 1.5% to R3.4 billion, supported by the introduction of 876 new slot machines and new stadium games, as well as a greater focus on table game execution and improved operational capabilities.

However, gross profit declined marginally by 0.7% to R2.0 billion, mainly due to higher investments in marketing and other capabilities.

“Land-based casinos contributed 51.9% of group income, maintaining our position as the leading land-based gaming operator in South Africa,” Sun International said.

The group also continued to leverage its wider entertainment offering, including venues such as the Sunbet Arena and Grand Arena, to drive visitation and strengthen the overall customer experience.
