The Gaming Commission of Ghana has officially inaugurated its new office at Agona Swedru, in the Agona East Constituency. The opening marks an important step toward expanding the Commission’s regulatory presence across the country.
Speaking at the inauguration, the Member of Parliament for Agona East, Hon. Queenstar Maame Pokuah Sawyerr, commended the Gaming Commission of Ghana for establishing the office in the area. She noted that it will strengthen the Commission’s mandate in Agona East and surrounding districts.
Hon. Sawyerr also raised concerns about the rising issue of gaming addiction. She advised young people, particularly students, to prioritise their education over gambling. She further encouraged parents to be mindful of their own behaviour, explaining that children often copy what they observe at home.
In his remarks, Acting Gaming Commissioner Mr. Emmanuel Siisi Quainoo described the choice of location as strategic, given that Agona Swedru serves as a key link between the Central Region, the Eastern Region, and other parts of the country. He said the expansion is part of efforts to respond to the rapid growth of the gaming industry in Ghana.
“We must grow closer to the people we serve. Let me be clear: the Commission is not against gaming. We are for safe, responsible, and lawful gaming. Our duty is to protect the youth from underage participation, safeguard vulnerable persons from addiction, and shield communities from crime and illicit activities associated with unlicensed operations,” Mr. Quainoo said.
He also urged staff of the new office to maintain the highest standards of professionalism and integrity, reminding them that they represent the face of the Commission. Representing the Chief of Agona Kwansakrom, Nana Kwansa Sarpong IV, the Abusuapanyin, Mr. Yaw Ofori, called on the Commission to intensify sensitisation in schools. He emphasised the need to educate students on the dangers and consequences of underage gaming.
He encouraged the Commission to use the new office to enforce regulations more effectively and strengthen oversight within the community. Overall, the new office is expected to improve monitoring and enforcement, promote responsible gaming practices, and enhance stakeholder engagement within Agona East District and beyond.
