It was in Douala, on June 1, 2026, that the French betting group Betclic officially made its entry into Cameroon. The ceremony was led by Yannick Tientcheu, Brand Manager for Africa. The operator arrives in a market with 14 active bookmakers, at a time when regulations are tightening. Cameroon is Betclic’s new base.
The Bordeaux-based group—present in Côte d’Ivoire since 2022 and active in five countries overall—has chosen Douala to formalize what it describes as part of an expanded African strategy. “We launched in Côte d’Ivoire in 2022. Cameroon has many similarities with Côte d’Ivoire, including the growth of digital and smartphone penetration and the widespread use of Mobile Money. So, we’re bringing the same solution,” explains Tientcheu.
The Côte d’Ivoire reference is significant. Between 2022 and 2023, Betclic’s turnover in that market rose more than sevenfold, from 3 billion to 24.8 billion FCFA. Based on this performance, the group does not hide its ambitions in Cameroon. “We’re coming with a solution that will allow us—just like in other countries—to become the market leader,” says Tientcheu.
However, this ambition faces both a tighter regulatory framework and stronger competition. In 2025, the Cameroonian government centralized all payments for online gambling through the aggregator InTouch. In addition, a 3% digital tax has applied since 2026 to foreign platforms that accept bets from Cameroonian players.
Operators are also required to obtain a MINAT license, use a .cm website domain, and maintain a local headquarters. Regarding this last requirement, Betclic has not yet specified its status with the regulator. The platform offers both sports betting and online casino, with payments made via Mobile Money. To stand out in a saturated market, Betclic highlights responsible gaming as a key positioning angle.
Access is limited to users aged 21 and over, with identity verification required during registration. “We have a team of more than 100 people to ensure there’s no drift,” says Tientcheu, who also mentions tools such as deposit limits and self-exclusion.
The launch comes just a few days before the start of the World Cup, which Betclic sees as a major entry opportunity. “We’re targeting sports enthusiasts—especially with the biggest competition starting next week,” says the manager.
