Betika Uganda is stepping beyond its traditional football partnerships by committing more than UGX 15 million (approximately US$4,000) to establish Uganda’s first professionally organized padel league. Through a collaboration with Kampala’s Smash Padel, the company has introduced the Betika Smash Premier League, a nine-week competition designed to bring regular fixtures, structured competition, and long-term development to the country’s growing padel community.
The maiden season wrapped up on May 23 at Smash Padel Bukoto in Kampala, with Smash Devils emerging as champions. The winning team received a UGX 5 million (around US$1,350) cash prize, along with medals and the league trophy. The league brought together four teams—Smash Devils, Smash Gunners, Smash Blues, and Smash Reds—in a format inspired by the English Premier League.
Each side fielded 15 players spread across five different skill tiers, ensuring competitive balance and wider involvement from players of varying abilities. Organizers aimed to elevate padel from informal social sessions into a more serious sporting ecosystem, complete with club identities, healthy rivalries, and consistent matchday experiences. Saturday fixtures were enhanced with live music, food, and fan activities to build a stronger community atmosphere around the sport.
Darshil Kamal Shah, co-founder of Smash Padel and co-creator of the league, emphasized the importance of this shift: “For padel to truly develop in Uganda, it needs more than casual games. It requires clubs, rivalries, meaningful stakes, identity, and reasons for players and supporters to keep coming back every week.”
Unlike traditional sponsorships that simply attach a brand name to an existing event, Betika played an active role in designing the league structure and overall matchday experience from the beginning.
Desire Akanduhura, Marketing Lead at Betika Uganda, highlighted the forward-thinking approach: “The real opportunity is not in waiting for the sport to go mainstream, but in getting involved early and contributing meaningfully to its growth.”
Padel, a dynamic racket sport that blends elements of tennis and squash, is currently one of the fastest-expanding sports globally, with rising interest and infrastructure investment across Africa.
Both Betika Uganda and Smash Padel have confirmed that preparations for a second season are already in progress, with expectations of larger participation and further enhancements to the competition.
