Betway has responded to a recent directive from the National Gambling Board (NGB) regarding online casino-style games, following a Supreme Court of Appeal ruling in Gauteng that questioned the legality of such offerings under provincial gambling laws.

“The recent Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) ruling was a narrow interpretation of the Gauteng Gambling Act and does not amount to a ban on online betting,” said a Betway spokesperson.
“We remain committed to working with regulators and government to ensure a clear, responsible, and well-regulated betting environment in South Africa.”

The NGB stated that the SCA ruling, which found that an operator in Gauteng offering online casino games had acted unlawfully, “applies to all bookmakers across the country.” Acting CEO Lungile Dukwana emphasized that provincial licensing authorities must ensure compliance and take “swift and decisive action” where necessary.

Betway maintains that the ruling applies specifically to Gauteng and does not constitute a nationwide prohibition on online casino-style betting. The operator confirmed it does not plan to withdraw its online casino offerings at this time and did not comment on potential legal challenges.

This comes amid heightened scrutiny of online betting in South Africa, where the distinction between sports-betting and casino-style games continues to be clarified by regulators.
