The eThekwini Municipality has announced a proposal to construct a new casino establishment in Umhlanga Village, located on Lagoon Drive.
This plan has sparked significant controversy, particularly from the Umhlanga Ratepayers and Residents Association, which has expressed its disapproval, citing concerns that the casino could lead to an increase in crime in the area.
Activist Sandy Papale has taken a stand against the city’s plans by launching a petition that has garnered nearly a thousand signatures. She highlights several key issues, including the potential for gambling addiction among young people and the negative impact on local tourism.
“I represent a lot of youth in this country,” Papale stated. “I believe in supporting them through education, sports, art, music, and culture. I oppose gambling, which I know can become a disease similar to drug addiction. Encouraging youth in that direction is harmful. As a resident familiar with Umhlanga, I also fear that property values will decline, especially since this proposed site is opposite the five-star Beverly Hills hotel.”
Local residents have voiced similar concerns, fearing that the casino could attract undesirable activities and diminish the family-friendly atmosphere that Umhlanga is known for. The proposal has ignited a broader discussion about the social implications of gambling establishments in residential areas.
The municipality has recently closed the window for objections to the proposal, which has frustrated many community members. In response to inquiries from Newswatch, eThekwini officials stated that the KZN Gaming and Betting Board oversees the regulations and operations of casinos, not the municipality itself. They emphasized that any concerns regarding crime prevention should be directed to local police authorities.
This proposal comes at a time when South Africa is experiencing a significant surge in online betting, contributing to a gambling industry estimated to be worth R60 billion. While proponents argue that casinos can boost local economies and create jobs, critics like Papale argue that the societal costs such as addiction and increased crime outweigh the potential benefits.
Many residents are now calling for a more comprehensive assessment of the social impact of such establishments before moving forward. Community meetings and forums have been suggested to further engage with the public and address their concerns.
