The Federal High Court of Ethiopia has issued a ruling to fully release the bank accounts of Kacha Digital Financial Services S.C., a leading fintech company and the country’s first privately licensed mobile money operator. The decision marks a significant development for the company and the broader digital financial services sector.
In its ruling, the Court clarified that a sum of 3,110,249.74 Ethiopian birr, representing funds held in accounts associated with betting companies on the Kacha platform, will remain temporarily suspended. These funds are subject to an ongoing investigation, reflecting the Court’s commitment to maintaining regulatory oversight and ensuring compliance with applicable financial and legal frameworks.
Importantly, the Court’s directive allows all other Kacha accounts across financial institutions to be fully accessible with immediate effect. Banks and relevant authorities have been instructed to implement the order without delay, enabling Kacha to resume its full range of operations.
This decision ensures that Kacha can continue processing transactions, managing customer funds, and settling payments seamlessly. It also reinforces confidence among customers, partners, and stakeholders in the stability and integrity of Ethiopia’s evolving fintech ecosystem.
Kacha Digital Financial Services S.C. welcomed the ruling, emphasizing its commitment to transparency, regulatory compliance, and customer trust. The company reiterated its readiness to cooperate fully with authorities regarding the ongoing investigation while maintaining uninterrupted service delivery to its users.
Industry observers note that the Court’s balanced approach allowing operational continuity while safeguarding investigative processes to support innovation and growth in Ethiopia’s digital finance sector. As mobile money adoption continues to expand, regulatory clarity and judicial support remain critical to fostering a secure and inclusive financial environment.
Kacha remains dedicated to advancing financial inclusion, leveraging technology to provide accessible, reliable, and efficient digital financial services to individuals and businesses across Ethiopia.
