The Gambling Authority of Botswana has expressed growing concern over an increase in illegal gambling activities in the Gantsi and North-West regions, warning that underground operations are becoming more widespread and difficult to regulate. Addressing the Parliamentary Committee on Statutory Bodies and State Enterprises, Acting Chief Executive Officer Moruntshi Kemorwale said recent assessments conducted by the Authority point to a troubling shift in gambling patterns within the affected regions.

According to Kemorwale, earlier concerns around problem gambling in Gantsi and the North-West were based on research carried out before major regulatory strengthening measures were introduced across Botswana’s gambling sector. However, new findings suggest that unlicensed and underground gambling activities are now emerging as the primary challenge.

“The latest assessments indicate a growing presence of illegal gambling operations that fall outside the regulated framework, making monitoring and enforcement increasingly complex,” Kemorwale told the Committee. The Authority warned that illegal gambling activities not only undermine regulatory efforts, but also expose vulnerable communities to financial harm, exploitation and irresponsible gambling practices due to the absence of consumer protection measures.

In response, the Gambling Authority has intensified enforcement operations in collaboration with law enforcement agencies and local stakeholders. The Authority is also expanding public education and responsible gambling awareness campaigns aimed at discouraging participation in illegal gambling activities and promoting safer, regulated alternatives.

Officials say the ongoing initiatives form part of broader national efforts to strengthen oversight of Botswana’s gambling industry while protecting communities from the social and economic risks associated with unregulated gambling. The Gambling Authority reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the integrity of the country’s gaming sector through stronger compliance measures, enhanced monitoring systems and continued engagement with affected communities.
