Tanzania’s Gaming Board Reports 97% Tax Revenue Increase
The Gaming Board of Tanzania (GBT) has announced a significant increase in tax revenue from gaming activities, rising from TZS 131.99 billion in the 2020/21 financial year to TZS 260.21 billion in 2024/25. This marks a remarkable 97 percent increase.

The announcement was made today in Dar es Salaam by GBT’s Director of Services, Mr. Daniel Olesumayan, during a working session organized in collaboration with the Office of the Treasury Registrar. The event gathered editors from various media outlets.

Mr. Olesumayan revealed that by June 2025, the gambling industry is expected to create approximately 30,000 jobs across the country, encompassing both formal and informal employment.

He further noted that over the past two years, new investors have injected more than TZS 66.7 billion into the Tanzanian economy, highlighting the sector’s rapid growth and its increasing contribution to national development

However, Olesumayan pointed out a significant challenge facing the industry. The proliferation of unlicensed operators, particularly those using gambling machines known as “dubwi.” These operators conduct business illegally in unauthorized areas, resulting in substantial losses in government revenue.

At the same event, Mr. Revocatus Kassimba, a representative from the Government Spokesperson’s Office, commended GBT for its contributions to the national economy through increased revenue and job creation. He emphasized that the government would continue to support the Board in ensuring proper regulation of the sector for the benefit of the nation.
