Governor of the Bank of Ghana Confirms Cryptocurrency Trading Legal

Bank of Ghana Confirms Legality of Cryptocurrency Trading

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Asiama, has confirmed that cryptocurrency trading, including asset transactions, is now legal in Ghana following the introduction of a formal regulatory framework.

Dr Asiama made the disclosure while speaking at the Bank of Ghana’s annual Nine Lessons, Carols, and Thanksgiving Service held at Bank Square on December 19, 2025. He explained that the new framework allows authorities to supervise virtual asset activities while effectively managing the risks associated with the rapidly growing sector.

According to the Governor, the development marks more than a legal recognition of cryptocurrency trading. He described it as a significant step toward strengthening policy direction, regulatory oversight, and financial sector supervision.

“These are not just legal milestones,” Dr Asiama said. “They are enablers of better policies, stronger supervision, and more effective regulation. Virtual asset trading is now legal, and individuals will not be arrested for engaging in crypto activities. What is important is that we now have a framework to manage the risks involved.”

He noted that the regulatory structure creates space for innovation and growth in digital finance, while also requiring caution and responsibility from market participants and regulators alike.

“The progress gives us room to move, but it also calls for responsibility and vigilance,” he added.

Dr Asiama further emphasised that the framework is designed to protect the stability of Ghana’s financial system by ensuring that risks linked to virtual asset activities are properly monitored and controlled, while still allowing the digital finance ecosystem to evolve within clear and defined rules.
