The Government committed to enhancing regulatory measures to ensure that this sector develops responsibly, prioritizing public safety, ethical standards, and national values.

Ambassador Raphael Faranisi, Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, emphasized the need for a proactive approach in managing the gaming sector, which is now integral to Zimbabwe’s socio-economic landscape. He pointed out that while gaming offers economic opportunities, it also carries significant risks that must be managed effectively. “The unchecked growth of the sector must not come at the expense of public safety,” Ambassador Faranisi stated. He revealed the importance of a legislative overhaul to strengthen licensing protocols, compliance mechanisms, and responsible betting initiatives. He called for renewed collaboration among stakeholders to promote a principled gaming industry.

Dr. Eugenia Chidhakwa, Chairperson of the Lotteries and Gaming Board (LGB), assured participants of the board’s commitment to ensuring quality and safety in gaming activities. She mentioned that efforts are underway to amend the Lotteries and Gaming Act to address the rapidly growing online gaming sector.

Dr. Misheck Chingozha, CEO of LGB, noted, “The days of demonizing gambling are over. This industry can be economic driven when managed responsibly.” He highlighted the importance of knowing when to stop and gambling responsibly.

Commissioner Paul Nyathi, spokesperson for the Zimbabwe Republic Police, expressed concerns about gambling addiction as a growing challenge that contributes to crime and social instability. He called for a united effort to tackle this issue.

H-Metro Editor Robson Sharuko, encouraged Zimbabweans to view sports and betting as a serious industry that supports livelihoods and economic development. He explain further the need for responsible gambling, especially avoiding the use of essential funds for betting.
