A tragedy has struck Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai (IBBUL) in Niger State. A 300-level Computer Science student, identified as Kelvin Danlami, has reportedly died by suicide. The incident occurred after the student allegedly lost N600,000 to sports betting.
According to sources, the money did not belong to Danlami. It had been entrusted to him, but he allegedly used the funds for gambling instead.
“It is true that one of our fellow students took his life after mismanaging money entrusted to him for house rent due to gambling,” a fellow student told a popular Nigeria Media. A neighbor discovered the student’s body in his room and immediately alerted the authorities.
The Niger State Police Command has confirmed the incident. Spokesperson SP Wasiu Abiodun provided details on the timeline:

- Time: Approximately 10:30 am
- Action: Police operatives from the Lapai Division visited the scene.
“A neighbour who discovered the situation raised an alarm, and the victim was rushed to the General Hospital, Lapai, where he was confirmed dead,” Abiodun stated.
The police have contacted the family of the deceased. Currently, an investigation is ongoing to ascertain the exact circumstances behind his action.
Aliyu Abubakar, General Secretary of the Students Union Government (SUG), also confirmed the death. He described the event as a tragic loss for the entire university community.
