The Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority (MAGLA) has once again boosted the Mount Mulanje Porter’s Race, by providing K30 million in support.
MAGLA has consistently been a key partner in this event through its Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives, which promote tourism, arts, culture, and sports development.
This year’s Mount Mulanje Porter’s Race attracted 145 athletes, including 100 local male runners, 25 female runners, and 20 international participants.
In the male category, Anthony Matias claimed first place, completing the 25-kilometre race in just 2 hours and 3 minutes, breaking the previous race record, Jafali Jossam finished second, while Frank Kachenja took third.
In the female category, Doris Fisha emerged victorious, with Mphatso Khembo in second place, and Teleza Master in third.
During the event, Dumbo Muwalo, Director of Finance and Administration for MAGLA, took the opportunity to promote responsible gambling among the local community.
“The Mount Mulanje Porter’s Race attracts people of all ages, so we wanted to highlight the importance of responsible gambling. It’s essential for the youth to understand that gambling is not for everyone and is only for those over the age of 18,” Muwalo stated.
Minister of Tourism, Vera Kamtukule, attended the event and emphasized the importance of preserving the heritage and natural beauty of Mount Mulanje. Delighted about the classification received from UNESCO. “It is our responsibility as Malawians to preserve its conservation value and cultural heritage,” she said.
Mount Mulanje is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which presents a tremendous opportunity and achievement. Winners in both the male and female categories received cash prizes:
- First place: K1 million each
- Second place: K600,000
- Third place: K400,000
This year’s race not only showcased athletic talent but also reinforced the importance of community engagement and heritage preservation.
