Authorities have issued a fresh call to combat illegal gambling, specifically involving minors. The Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority (MAGLA) emphasized that betting should not be viewed as a source of income. This call to action coincided with the launch of a quiz competition hosted by Mibawa Studios.
MAGLA provided a significant MK92 million financial boost for the event. Officials stated that the competition will serve as a platform to distribute anti-gambling messages directly to schoolchildren.
Dumbo Muwalo, MAGLA’s Director of Finance, highlighted the social risks involved. He noted that individuals addicted to gambling often become unproductive members of society.
Mibawa Studios Executive Director John Nthakomwa described the initiative as part of the organization’s broader “edutainment” drive.
The project has also received support from the education sector. Feggie Mphasi, Education Division Manager for the Southwest, praised the competition. She noted that it complements the government’s ongoing efforts to promote quality education.
