The Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority (MAGLA) donated K300 million to support the 2025/26 Lean Season and Emergency Response Programmes. The symbolic cheque was handed over in Mangochi at a ceremony attended by government officials and local leaders.

MAGLA Board Chairperson Proud Chalira said the donation responds to President Arthur Peter Mutharika’s appeal for financial and in‑kind support after a state of disaster was declared following prolonged dry spells that damaged food security across the country.

“MAGLA remains committed to supporting the government and humanitarian efforts, particularly during times of crisis. This donation aims to alleviate the hardships faced by vulnerable communities during the lean season,” Chalira said.

Dr Justin Saidi, Chief Secretary in the Office of the President and Cabinet, described the contribution as timely and generous, and stressed the importance of public‑private partnerships in meeting urgent needs.

The donation will be channelled through the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) and a network of humanitarian partners. Relief is expected to reach an estimated 4 million food‑insecure individuals and more than 21,000 households affected by recent heavy rains and floods.

Support will include food distribution, essential supplies and other emergency assistance. MAGLA’s contribution highlights the role statutory authorities can play in social and economic development by reinvesting gaming revenues into public‑welfare initiatives.

The Lean Season and Emergency Response Programmes aim to provide immediate relief while supporting longer‑term food‑security measures, so communities are better prepared for future climate and environmental shocks. This donation aligns with MAGLA’s mandate to promote responsible gaming and to use part of its proceeds to improve the welfare of Malawians nationwide.
