Morocco has taken a significant step against illegal online betting, the Casablanca Commercial Court ruled that the country’s main internet providers must block access to unlicensed gambling websites. The ruling followed legal action by Marocaine des Jeux et des Sports (MDJS), the state-owned entity that manages legal sports betting and lotteries in Morocco.

The court ordered Maroc Telecom, Orange Maroc, and inwi to prevent users from accessing offshore betting sites that operate without approval. The court emphasized that internet providers are best positioned to curb illegal betting since they control access to the internet. They were instructed to implement basic technical measures like DNS blocking and IP blocking to prevent players in Morocco from visiting these sites.

Providers that fail to comply face fines of 10,000 Moroccan dirhams for each day they do not block illegal platforms, making this ruling one of Morocco’s strongest actions taken against unauthorized online gambling. This ruling is part of a larger initiative by MDJS that began in late 2025. Authorities are also targeting illegal payment methods used for funding betting accounts and social media pages that promote unlicensed operators.

Officials have stated that illegal betting sites do not protect players. Many lack age verification, fair play controls, and responsible gambling tools, exposing players to potential financial loss without any legal recourse. Supporters argue that blocking illegal sites will help protect players, promote responsible gaming, and keep betting activities within Morocco’s legal framework. It also ensures that gambling revenues remain in the country to support public projects.

However, critics warn that some players might attempt to bypass these blocks using VPNs or mirror websites, suggesting that illegal betting could persist despite stricter regulations. Despite these challenges, the ruling sends a clear message to offshore betting companies: operating without a license in Morocco will not be tolerated. By holding internet providers responsible for blocking access, Morocco demonstrates its commitment to controlling online gambling and safeguarding its players.
