MTN MoMo App South Africa has introduced an innovative Handset Rent to Own phones solution aimed at increasing digital inclusion. This initiative seeks to empower millions of South Africans by making smartphone ownership more accessible.
With a commitment to a customer-first approach, MTN’s new offering allows users, particularly the unbanked and underserved, to own a 4G or 5G smartphone for as little as R10 per day. Importantly, there are no credit checks or paperwork involved.

This launch builds on MTN’s recent initiatives, including Smartphone For All and Shesh@ 5G Sim delivery, reinforcing the company’s mission to tackle the digital divide in South Africa. The rent-to-own model is designed with the realities of the informal and underbanked economy in mind.
Powered by MTN’s trusted fintech platform in collaboration with Airvantage, the service employs advanced AI for affordability assessments—no payslips or credit history required.
Once approved, customers can select a flexible payment plan of three, six, nine, or twelve months. After completing the payments, the device belongs to them.
