The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) today welcomed delegates from the Association of Nigeria Bookmakers (ANB) and the Nigeria Licensed Lottery Operators Forum (NLLOF), led by NLLOF Chairman Mr. Chima Onwuka, during a courtesy visit aimed at promoting compliance with data protection regulations in the gaming sector.
During the meeting, discussions emphasized the urgent need to enhance data protection practices in the gaming industry, which processes significant amounts of personal data from millions of Nigerians daily. The delegation reaffirmed its commitment to complying with the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 (NDP Act), highlighting the sector’s substantial contribution of approximately ₦150 billion annually in tax revenue.
The NDPC praised both organizations for their proactive approach in seeking guidance and requesting capacity-building programs for their members and agents. “Their willingness to engage with the Commission demonstrates a shared understanding that robust data protection practices are essential for building trust among citizens and stakeholders,” said Dr. Vincent Olatunji NDPC Chairman.
With the gaming sector handling personal data for over 60 million Nigerians each month, the Commission emphasized that compliance is not just a legal obligation but also a strategic opportunity to enhance operational integrity and public confidence. “At the NDPC, we view data controllers and processors as partners. Our aim is not to hinder innovation but to regulate in a way that supports growth and ease of doing business,” Dr. Vincent added.
The NDPC is currently developing sector-specific compliance guidelines and plans to offer training and support to help the gaming industry align with recognized data protection and privacy best practices. The Commission looks forward to continued collaboration to enhance trust, accountability, and responsible innovation across the sector.
