The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has announced a rigorous crackdown on the increasing trend of students using their educational allowances for online gambling. This initiative aims to protect the integrity of public funds and ensure that financial aid is used for its intended purpose: supporting academic success.

NSFAS Acting CEO, Waseem Carrim, has cautioned that diverting allowances into gambling activities places both the academic progress and financial stability of students at significant risk. The scheme identified several core drivers behind this behavior which are Financial Pressure, Digital Accessibility and Aggressive Marketing

“South Africa has a gambling problem. But unfortunately, it seems to have permeated into students as well,”

Carrim, highlighting the urgency of the intervention.

In response, a formal partnership has been established between NSFAS and the National Gambling Board (NGB). This collaboration focuses on a proactive, awareness-based approach at tertiary institutions across South Africa.

The strategy centers on harm reduction, aimed at preventing the development of addictive behaviors before they jeopardize a student’s future. Lungile Dukwana, Acting CEO of the NGB, emphasized that the priority is protecting young people by implementing evidence-based approaches to minimize gambling-related harm.

Beyond individual student welfare, the partnership serves a broader purpose: safeguarding public funds. Because NSFAS allowances are taxpayer-funded, the misuse of these resources for gambling is viewed as a threat to the sustainability of the national education budget.

By raising awareness and fostering a culture of responsible financial management, NSFAS and the NGB hope to ensure that educational grants remain a tool for empowerment rather than a source of financial distress.
