Thailand’s Cabinet has officially withdrawn the proposed Bill to legalize casino gambling, a main initiative from the ruling Pheu Thai party. This decision follows the suspension of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra.

Overview of the Bill

The Bill aimed to create “entertainment complexes” to boost the economy and curb illegal gambling. However, Cabinet spokesperson Jirayu Huangsab stated that more studies are needed to understand the social implications of this venture.

Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat expressed disappointment over the delay, calling it a missed opportunity for economic growth. Pheu Thai’s goal was to position Thailand as a regional gambling hub, but the party’s parliamentary majority has weakened due to affiliate partners withdrawing support amid a scandal involving the prime minister.

Paetongtarn is currently suspended pending an ethics investigation related to a diplomatic incident but has retained her role as culture minister. Meanwhile, Interior Minister Phumtham Wechayachai is serving as acting premier. This situation underscores the complexities of Thailand’s political landscape and the challenges in pursuing significant economic reforms.
