A recent report from the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) highlights the increasing economic significance of tourism in Ghana, revealing that same-day visitors spent a total of GH¢24 million during the review period.

The highest spending occurred in the third quarter of 2023, when tourists spent GH¢7.6 million, primarily on rest stops, shopping, and transportation. These three categories alone accounted for over 70% of total tourist expenditure.

Tourists from other African countries contributed the largest share of spending, while tourists from Latin America recorded the highest per capital expenditure, averaging GH¢12,272 per visitor.

Ghana experienced a significant increase in visitor numbers, with 112,000 arrivals recorded in August alone, according to the Inbound Same-Day Visitors Report. The report noted a sharp rise in spending by transit visitors, those passing through Ghana which jumped from GH¢443,000 in Q4 2022 to GH¢5.7 million in Q3 2023.

The data revealed that most visitors were male, aged between 36 and 64, and well-educated, with a majority holding tertiary-level qualifications.

Top tourist attractions included the Bisa Abrewa Museum, Cape Coast Castle, National Museum, and Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park.

Authorities emphasize that these findings underscore tourism’s vital role in Ghana’s economy, particularly in generating foreign exchange, supporting local businesses, and promoting cultural heritage.
