South Africa’s Western Cape collected R1.192 billion (US$72.9 million) in gambling tax revenue between January and July 2026, according to the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board (WCGRB). Sports betting accounted for the largest share of tax receipts.
Sports betting generated R692.44 million (US$42.3 million) in tax, followed by horse racing at R217.68 million (US$13.3 million), casinos at R211.89 million (US$13.0 million), and limited payout machines (LPMs) at R69.84 million (US$4.3 million).
During the seven-month period, sports betting turnover reached R224.35 billion (US$13.71 billion), producing R10.66 billion (US$651.8 million) in gross gaming revenue (GGR).
In July, sports betting turnover was R31.78 billion (US$1.94 billion), while GGR stood at R1.44 billion (US$88 million) and tax collections totaled R93.56 million (US$5.7 million). May recorded the strongest performance for the sector, with turnover of R39.83 billion (US$2.43 billion) and tax revenue of R129.53 million (US$7.9 million).
From January to July, casinos generated R1.47 billion (US$90 million) in GGR, with gaming machines contributing R1.23 billion and table games R232.24 million. Casino tax receipts in July were R30.86 million (US$1.9 million).
For LPMs, GGR totaled R506.66 million (US$31 million), and tax receipts were R69.84 million (US$4.3 million) over the period. July was the strongest month for LPMs, producing R77.46 million in GGR.
Horse racing recorded R5.57 billion (US$340.3 million) in turnover and R3.63 billion (US$221.8 million) in GGR for the period. In July, horse racing GGR reached R644.50 million (US$39.4 million), generating R38.67 million (US$2.4 million) in tax, about 27% higher than June.
Overall, the figures highlight the role of regulated gambling in supporting Western Cape provincial tax revenue, with sports betting remaining the dominant contributor in the first seven months of 2026.
