Zambians were shocked this morning by a disturbing Facebook post from Mubiana Mubiana, a 27-year-old police officer at Mongu Police Station. In his post, he announced his intention to end his life due to the devastating effects of gambling.
Mubiana acknowledged that gambling has claimed many lives, and he expressed his fear that he would be next. He shared his struggles with mounting debts resulting from his gambling habits and urged others to avoid making the same mistakes.
He recounted a moment of success when he won over K140,000 but tragically decided to re-gamble it, only to lose everything. He lamented that despite his efforts to turn his life around, he found himself trapped in a downward spiral of financial loss, personal shame, and professional humiliation.
Mubiana wrote, “My life has become miserable. I don’t even understand who I am anymore. I’m a liar, untrustworthy, and a bad person. This is too much for me.” He expressed deep disappointment in himself, feeling he had let down his family, colleagues in the Zambia Police Service, and everyone who believed in him.
Following his post, concerned netizens raised alarms about his safety and called for help. Fortunately, sources confirmed that he is safe but currently detained at Mongu Police Station.
A close family friend revealed that Mubiana’s struggle with gambling addiction has led him to contemplate suicide multiple times. He had previously attempted to take his life by drinking poison and had recently used a gun in a desperate act.
Reports indicate that he shot himself in the mouth but was quickly transported to Lewanika General Hospital by well-wishers for urgent medical attention. Thankfully, his injuries were assessed by medical staff and turned out to be non-life-threatening.
After his recovery, Mubiana was taken into custody by local authorities and remains at Mongu Police Station. However, police have not yet released official details regarding the reasons for his detention.
