The commission said the action was due to alleged unpaid taxes and levy fees, sparking concern among customers and staff of the popular betting company.

In response, Dr. Ayo Ojuroye, CEO of Bet9ja, firmly denied that the company owes any money to Enugu State. He said the company has complied with all legal and financial requirements for over 12 years and has tried multiple times to resolve the issue through dialogue with state authorities, but without success. “Bet9ja has always operated within the law. We do not owe any legitimate taxes or levies to Enugu State,” Dr. Ojuroye stated.

The main point of disagreement appears to be how the company’s revenue is calculated for state purposes. Bet9ja argues that any charges should only apply to earnings actually generated within Enugu, not on money earned from operations in other states. The company described the enforcement action as a misinterpretation of its obligations and said it will challenge the ex-parte High Court order in court.
