More than 57 unlicensed betting machines have been confiscated and destroyed in Embu East Sub-County as authorities intensify efforts to combat illegal gambling, unlicensed betting operations and underage participation in betting. The machines were seized during a security operation targeting unlicensed gambling activities across various parts of Embu East.
They were subsequently destroyed at the Runyenjes Deputy County Commissioner’s grounds. Speaking during the destruction exercise, Embu County Commissioner Maurice Wanyonyi said the operation was aimed at enforcing betting regulations, curbing petty crime and addressing concerns over the growing accessibility of gambling to children.
Wanyonyi said the operators of the confiscated machines did not hold valid licenses from the Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB). He added that some of the premises where the machines were being operated had also become associated with criminal activity.
“The operation is part of broader efforts to ensure compliance with betting regulations and protect local communities from the negative effects of unlicensed gambling,” authorities said.
Wanyonyi also raised concerns about the exposure of underage children to gambling, calling for increased vigilance among authorities, operators and communities to prevent minors from accessing betting activities.
Embu East Deputy County Commissioner Jane Waruinge, who chairs the area security committee, commended security officers, local administrators and residents for their cooperation in identifying and reporting illegal betting activities.
She stressed that collaboration between law enforcement agencies and members of the public remains critical to identifying unlicensed gambling operations and supporting enforcement efforts.
The crackdown forms part of wider efforts by Kenyan authorities to strengthen compliance with betting and gambling licensing requirements. Authorities in other parts of the country, including Malindi and Baringo, have also recently confiscated and destroyed illegal betting machines as enforcement against unlicensed gambling activities intensifies.
Authorities in Embu East are expected to continue monitoring betting premises and take action against operators found conducting gambling activities without the required licenses.
