Betway, through its Betway Cares Foundation, has officially commenced construction on the Montshiwa Sports Complex in Kanye, marking a significant step in the company’s commitment to community empowerment and sports development across Botswana.
This BWP 4.3 million investment, part of Betway’s Building Neighbourhood Dreams initiative is aimed to create a world-class sports and recreation facility that will nurture future generations of athletes and serve as a vibrant hub for community engagement.
The groundbreaking ceremony took place amidst the refreshing breeze of Kanye, gathering key dignitaries and community leaders, including Hon. Minister of Sports and Arts Jacob Kelebeng, Kgosi Gaseitsiwe, District Commissioner Mr. Mompoloki Mochanang, Council Chair Hon. Morapedi Kgosithebe, and Botswana’s Olympic gold medalist Collen Kebinatshipi, along with hundreds of local residents.
This moment symbolized the start of a transformational project rooted in collaboration, pride, and a shared vision. The idea for the Montshiwa Sports Complex emerged during a Betway team workshop, inspired by heartfelt conversations with celebrated athletes Collen Kebinatshipi and Isaac Makwala.
Their stories underscored a universal truth: every champion’s journey begins humbly, often with just a cone, a hurdle, and a dream. Standing in Kanye, the birthplace of Botswana’s first Olympic gold medal, the Betway team recognized the opportunity to turn that insight into action by creating a launchpad for future champions.
The Montshiwa Sports Complex is designed as a multi-purpose, community-centered sports hub featuring a modern football pitch and athletics track, solar-powered lighting for sustainability, upgraded changing rooms and spectator stands, community-run tuckshops to promote local entrepreneurship, and vibrant murals by local artists celebrating Kanye’s heritage and youthful spirit.
Beyond its infrastructure, the project is built with sustainability at its core. With solar energy integration, local skills training, and support for small enterprises for facility maintenance, the complex aims to generate long-term community value and self-sufficiency.
During the event, a Betway spokesperson shared their vision: “At Betway, we see our purpose as amplifying potential. Every community holds hidden gold in talent, creativity, speed, and resilience. All it needs is a launchpad. As we turned the soil in Kanye, we felt the weight of possibility knowing that from this dust will rise Botswana’s next generation of athletes and artists.”
The groundbreaking in Kanye is just the first of several community investments planned under the Building Neighbourhood Dreams initiative, which aims to uplift villages across Botswana through sports, arts, and enterprise infrastructure.
