Betway, a leading sports betting company, has invested P1.5 million in Botswana’s Clash of Legends football showcase, securing the naming rights and rebranding the tournament as the “Betway Clash of Legends.”

The sponsorship also comes with a major revamp of the tournament format. Organizers are moving away from the traditional “nation vs nation” setup, which previously featured former national team stars representing country sides such as Botswana Zebras Legends against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana Legends.

This year’s edition shifts the spotlight firmly to club football rivalries, bringing together some of Southern Africa’s most celebrated former players under iconic club banners.

The 2026 tournament will feature legends from South African giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, alongside Botswana football powerhouses Township Rollers and Mochudi Centre Chiefs. The matchups are expected to revive historic rivalries that defined Southern African football for decades.

The new format is designed to reignite fan passion by tapping into deep-rooted club loyalties, while also attracting wider regional interest given the large supporter bases attached to the participating teams. Organisers believe the change will make the event more competitive, entertaining, and commercially attractive.

Beyond nostalgia, the revamped Clash of Legends is also being positioned as a growing entertainment property, blending sport, heritage, and fan engagement. The inclusion of iconic retired players aims to give supporters a chance to relive classic football moments while celebrating the legacy of the region’s most influential clubs.

Organisers say the expanded vision will help elevate the tournament into a premier annual showcase, with potential for further expansion across Southern Africa in future editions.
