The Gambling Authority of Botswana has confirmed that the country remains on track to launch its long-awaited national lottery before the end of the year, marking a significant milestone in the development of Botswana’s regulated gaming sector.

Speaking before the Parliamentary Committee on Statutory Bodies and State Enterprises, Acting Chief Executive Officer Moruntshi Kemorwale said the Authority is actively overseeing a structured implementation process to ensure the successful establishment of the national lottery framework.

According to Kemorwale, preparations are progressing steadily, with critical regulatory, operational and compliance mechanisms currently being finalized to support a transparent, secure and fully functional lottery system upon launch. “The Authority is committed to ensuring that the national lottery is introduced in a manner that promotes accountability, integrity and public confidence,” he stated during the briefing.

The planned rollout forms part of broader efforts to strengthen Botswana’s gambling industry through enhanced regulation, responsible gaming measures and increased economic participation. Authorities believe the national lottery could create new revenue streams for national development initiatives while also generating employment opportunities across multiple sectors.

Industry observers say the introduction of a regulated national lottery could also help formalize parts of the gaming market and provide consumers with safer, government-supervised participation channels. The Gambling Authority has not yet announced an official launch date or the operator that will oversee the lottery. However, officials indicated that further updates will be communicated as the implementation process advances.

Once operational, the national lottery is expected to become one of the most significant additions to Botswana’s regulated gaming landscape in recent years.
