The Ministry of Trade and Entrepreneurship, in collaboration with the Gambling Authority and the Botswana Institute for Development Policy Analysis (BIDPA), has officially launched a nationwide review of Botswana’s 2002 Gaming and Gambling Policy. The review aims to modernize the country’s regulatory framework, strengthen governance, and ensure the gaming and gambling sector contributes meaningfully to national development while protecting the public interest.

The process was officially started today in Palapye, where key stakeholders including representatives from government, private sector operators, and parastatal institutions gathered at Majestic 5 Hotel for the first round of consultations. The engagement creates an opportunity for participants to share insights and recommendations on the future direction of the industry.

Further consultations will be held across three major regions of Botswana to ensure broad participation and to capture diverse perspectives from all relevant stakeholders. Officials stated that the policy review is an important step toward building a more transparent, accountable, and economically sustainable gaming industry.

The revised framework is expected to respond to emerging trends, improve regulatory oversight, and promote responsible gaming practices. The Government of Botswana is committed to developing a balanced and forward-looking policy environment that supports industry growth while prioritizing social responsibility and consumer protection.
