Crackdown on Unlicensed Gaming Operators in Lagos State

The Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority (LSLGA) has issued a stern warning to several organizations conducting unlicensed gaming operations in Lagos State without the necessary licenses.

According to a statement from the LSLGA, the attention of the authority “has been drawn to the activities of some organizations conducting gaming operations in Lagos State without obtaining the prerequisite licenses from LSLGA and thereby in contravention of Section 33(3) of the Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority Law 2021.”

The statement goes on to list the erring organizations, which include well-known brands such as ZEBET, MOZZARTBET, GOBET247, AFRIBET, and FOOTBALL.COM, among others.

The LSLGA derives its power to regulate lottery and gaming activities from Section 4 (7) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended). This position has been affirmed by several court rulings, including the case of Edet v Chagoon (2008) and Attorney-General, Plateau State v Goyol (2007).

“The Lagos State Government has the authority to legislate on such matters, and any organization operating without a license is in violation of the law,” the LSLGA statement said.

The authority has warned the unlicensed operators to immediately cease their activities and obtain the necessary licenses to avoid further legal action. The crackdown is part of the state government’s efforts to ensure that all gaming activities in Lagos are properly regulated and in compliance with the law.
