The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have raised concerns over the selection of Sizekhaya Holdings as the new operator of South Africa’s National Lottery, arguing that the company is not ready for the role. The party cites allegations of political ties and a lack of transparency in the selection process.

Demanding Accountability

The EFF has called for Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (DTIC) Minister Parks Tau to appear before a committee to explain why Sizekhaya was chosen.

On Wednesday, Tau announced that Sizekhaya had been awarded the Fourth National Lottery and Sports Pool Licence. The company has links to KwaZulu-Natal businessmen Moses Tembe and Sandile Zungu.

Business and Political Connections

  • Moses Tembe is a well-known businessman and co-chairperson of the KZN Growth Coalition. He is also the father of Nelli Tembe, who tragically passed away in April 2021.
  • Sandile Zungu, owner of AmaZulu Football Club, has political ties to the African National Congress (ANC). In 2022, he ran for the KZN chairperson position but later withdrew.

Sizekhaya’s National Lottery license is valid for eight years.

Allegations of Political Influence

In a letter to the Portfolio Committee on Trade, Industry and Competition, EFF member Sinawo Thambo highlighted concerns over potential conflicts of interest regarding Sizekhaya’s takeover from Ithuba Holdings, the previous lottery administrator.

> “This entity is a subsidiary of the Goldrush Consortium, which we have previously flagged as problematic and legally questionable,” Thambo stated.

Thambo also argued that Tembe and Zungu’s political affiliations—including links to former President Jacob Zuma’s MK Party—raise concerns about undue influence.

Calls for Action

The EFF criticized Tau’s failure to address transparency issues surrounding Sizekhaya and insisted that the committee take decisive action to protect the credibility of the National Lottery and the integrity of Parliament.

Meanwhile, Ithuba Holdings announced that its legal team is considering legal action following the DTIC and National Lotteries Commission (NLC) decision.
