The Ethiopian Lottery Service has officially revoked the licenses of all sports betting organizations previously licensed to operate in Ethiopia, effective December 15, 2025.

The decision follows directives issued by the Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and is based on the regulatory powers granted to the Ethiopian Lottery Service under existing laws. The revocation applies uniformly to all betting operators, including those currently active and those previously banned.

According to the Service, the measure was taken in the public interest after a comprehensive national review of the betting and financial sectors. Findings from the review revealed widespread illegal practices, repeated violations of licensing agreements, and unlawful financial transfers that pose serious risks to national security.

All sports betting operators and system providers are required to immediately halt all betting-related activities, whether conducted physically, digitally, or through any other channel. No new bets are permitted, and all deposit gateways must cease operations without delay.

Operators are also instructed to preserve all server data, financial records, and user information. Any attempt to destroy, alter, or conceal evidence will be treated as a criminal offense under Ethiopian law.

Financial institutions, including banks, payment service providers, and payment system operators, have been directed to block all betting-related transactions and prevent any form of commercial activity by betting companies following the license revocation.

The Ethiopian Lottery Service stated that it will strictly enforce this directive in collaboration with relevant government institutions. Any organization or individual found violating the order will face legal consequences in line with applicable laws.

The Service reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the integrity of Ethiopia’s financial system and protecting the public from illegal and harmful betting activities.
