Gabon launched the Gabonese Gaming Authority (GDJ) in Libreville on October 22, 2026, as part of a plan to reorganize the gambling sector under a state-granted monopoly. The authority will combine gaming operations with licensing and oversight, while directing sector revenue towards development projects.
The GDJ is the exclusive concessionaire of Gabon’s state gambling monopoly. It will run its own games and issue licenses to third-party operators that meet regulatory requirements.
The authority will monitor operators’ compliance and work to improve the traceability of bets and winnings. Its responsibilities will also include preventing fraud and money laundering, promoting responsible gambling, restricting access for minors and reducing the risks associated with excessive betting.
Vice-President of the Government Hermann Immongault chaired the launch ceremony. Interior Minister Edgard Moukoumbi and Sports Minister Paul Ulrich Kessany were among the senior officials in attendance.
The GDJ is expected to direct gambling revenue towards projects that benefit the wider population. Its management announced plans to provide multi-year funding for the national football championship through a proposed agreement with the National Professional Football League (Linafp).
The planned support is intended to make funding more predictable and reduce disruptions caused by shortages. Other sports, cultural programmes and social initiatives may also receive funding from the sector.
