Monsignor Lawrence Ssemusu, chaplain at the Makerere University Business School (MUBS), has urged Christians to stop “gambling” with their faith and instead make clear, firm decisions for God—following the example of the Uganda Martyrs. He delivered the message during Mass at St Gyaviira Catholic Sub-Parish in Seguku-Lweza, where celebrations were held in honor of the parish patron saint, Gyaviira Musoke.

While preaching, Msgr Ssemusu encouraged believers to take a strong and consistent stand in their Christian life, warning them against indecision in matters of faith.

“Do not gamble with your faith. Make a firm decision about where you stand,” he said.

He also advised Christians to draw inspiration from St Gyaviira and other Uganda Martyrs, highlighting their courage and steadfastness as a model for believers today.

“Be firm Catholics who are not shaken, just like Gyaviira,” he added.

The celebrations were organised largely by Catholic women and were held under the theme: “Christ lives in me.” The event also coincided with reflections on the feast of the Body and Blood of Christ. Msgr Ssemusu emphasised the importance of the Eucharist in strengthening Christian life and promoting unity within the Church.

Robert Henry Muwanga, head of laity at the parish, presented achievements recorded over the past year and outlined future plans as the sub-parish prepares to mark 50 years of existence.

About St. Gyaviira Musoke

St. Gyaviira Musoke, also known as Gyaviira Musoke Mayanja, was born in Seguku, the same area where the church now stands. He served in the palace of Kabaka Mwanga and received religious instruction during that period.

At only 17 years old, Gyaviira was among the 22 Catholic martyrs killed on June 3, 1886. He was later canonised and is honoured within the Catholic Church. He is remembered as a patron saint associated with communications and those afflicted by witchcraft.
