Gambling Regulatory Authority Tackles Gambling in Universities

Gambling Regulatory Authority collaborates with JOOUST

The Gambling Regulatory Authority has shown strong support for initiatives aimed at reducing gambling-related harm in Kenyan universities following a stakeholder forum at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST). During the event, Assistant Director Oluoch Oyucho praised JOOUST’s research on gambling impacts, specifically highlighting the GEPU project (Gambling Effects on University Populations). He emphasized that the project’s findings will be crucial in shaping policies to better regulate gambling activities on campuses.

The Authority has expressed its willingness to collaborate with academic institutions and other stakeholders to address the negative effects of gambling in university settings. Ongoing discussions are focused on formalizing partnerships and sharing research insights across regional and international universities, reinforcing a united effort to combat gambling-related issues.

In alignment with this initiative, JOOUST is developing a comprehensive Gambling Harm Intervention Policy. This policy will introduce measures such as restricting access to betting sites on campus, enhancing counseling services, and coordinating with financial aid organizations to safeguard students’ fee payments. Funded by the Bristol Hub for Gambling Harms Research, the project aims to provide practical support for affected students, many of whom gamble with loan money, risking significant debt and emotional distress.

This policy development is particularly timely, as more students report financial difficulties linked to gambling. With additional funding to refine these policies, JOOUST’s efforts could serve as a model for other Kenyan institutions facing similar challenges. Collaboration with the Gambling Regulatory Authority not only has the potential to establish stronger national guidelines for mitigating gambling harms but also addresses the critical need for a holistic approach to student welfare, considering Kenya’s evolving legal stance on gambling.

By prioritizing research and policy development, Kenyan universities can create healthier campus environments that promote student well-being. The engagement between JOOUST and the Gambling Regulatory Authority represents a positive step toward fostering a culture of responsible gambling and ensuring students receive the necessary support to make informed choices. This initiative is vital in addressing the broader implications of gambling in society, particularly among vulnerable populations like university students.
