The Government remains focused on improving regulation of the gaming sector in Tanzania to ensure full legal compliance and safeguard public interests. This was highlighted during a seminar organized by the Gaming Board of Tanzania (GBT) for the Dodoma Regional Security Committee, held on 23 April 2026 at the Regional Commissioner’s Office, Mkapa Building.

Speaking at the seminar, Dr. Khatibu Kazungu, the Dodoma Regional Administrative Secretary, said the gaming sector contributes to government revenue and therefore requires close supervision. He also noted the need to ensure compliance with national laws, including the minimum participation age of 18 years.

In his remarks, James Mbalwe, GBT Director General, said the sector makes a significant contribution to Tanzania’s economy, collecting about TZS 260 billion in taxes in 2025. The Director of Corporate Services at GBT, Daniel Ole Sumayan, explained that the Board is responsible for regulating and coordinating gaming activities.

This includes licensing, conducting operator inspections, and ensuring compliance with integrity and legal requirements, as well as advising the Government on revenue collection. Meanwhile, Jabir Shekimweri, Dodoma District Commissioner, emphasized the need for public education to address gambling addiction.

He urged that gaming should be viewed as entertainment rather than a source of employment or income. The Gaming Board of Tanzania is a public institution established under the Gaming Act of 2003, with a mandate to regulate and coordinate gaming activities across the country.
