Kenya’s gambling industry is set to undergo a significant regulatory transformation as the Gambling Regulatory Authority (GRA) assumes full oversight from the Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB), effective February 28, 2026. The transition marks a new chapter in the governance of the country’s gaming sector under the Gambling Control Act, 2025, aimed at modernizing regulation and strengthening industry standards.

During this period, all licensing applications, including new permits and renewals, are temporarily suspended. Gambling operators are advised to review and update compliance protocols to ensure alignment with the upcoming regulatory framework. The GRA’s mandate emphasizes responsible gambling, enhanced consumer protection, and adherence to international best practices.

Leadership appointments for the authority are underway, with President William Ruto appointing Joseph Kirui Limo as Non-Executive Chairperson of the GRA. Recruitment for the Director General/CEO position has recently concluded, signaling the operational readiness of the new authority.

Operators, particularly those in digital and online gambling, are encouraged to monitor official communications closely and update internal policies in line with the GRA’s standards. Key focus areas include player protection measures, financial safeguards, and responsible gaming practices.
