The Kenyan gaming industry is coming together to promote responsible gaming and ensure a sustainable future. This initiative focuses on self-regulation and collaboration with government authorities.

During the 20th anniversary celebrations of the Association of Gaming Operators Kenya (AGOK), industry leaders emphasized their commitment to fair regulations, tackling illegal gambling, and protecting players. Initiatives like the Chukua Control campaign, training programs, and enhanced self-exclusion systems were highlighted as key efforts.

The sector has experienced a 21% increase in tax revenue from the previous year, thanks to a new tax regime that targets deposits and withdrawals rather than stakes and winnings. The government is recognizing the industry’s significance, with the newly established Gaming Regulatory Authority (GRA) working alongside operators to foster a well-regulated environment that supports growth and community investments, such as financing infrastructure projects like the Talanta Sports Stadium.

The enactment of the Gambling Control Act, 2025, and the formation of the GRA reflect a commitment to orderly sector development and effective dispute resolution. Officials like Deputy Commissioner Weldon Ngeno and GRA Chairman Hon. Joseph Kirui Limo stressed the sector’s contributions to national revenue and its evolving role in digital consumption and community development.

Michael Kagika from the National Treasury noted the industry’s role in mobilizing resources and the government’s innovative financing efforts. AGOK aims to strengthen its partnership with regulators and other institutions, promoting transparency, compliance, and responsible gaming. The Chukua Control campaign, launched in collaboration with the government, seeks to raise awareness about responsible gambling through nationwide outreach, mental health support, and accessible helplines, fostering a safer environment for millions of Kenyans engaged in gaming activities.
