In a remarkable turn of events, over 30 people have been indicted in connection with two interconnected federal gambling probes involving the NBA and organized crime. Among those arrested are Chauncy Billups, 49, a Hall of Fame member and current head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers, and Terry Rozier, 31, a player for the Miami Heat.
These high-profile arrests have sent shockwaves through the sports community, raising concerns about the integrity of professional basketball. According to FBI Director Kash Patel, these schemes involved tens of millions of dollars in illicit activities, including wire fraud, money laundering, extortion, and illegal gambling.
Patel highlighted two main investigations. The first focuses on insider sports betting, where individuals provided non-public information about player performance to criminal partners. This practice undermines the fairness of betting markets and raises ethical questions about the involvement of players in gambling activities. The second investigation centers on allegations of rigged poker games across the U.S.
Players were lured with promises of competing against celebrities, but behind the scenes, sophisticated technology was used to manipulate outcomes. Authorities reported that fraudulent card shufflers and x-ray tables were employed, creating a facade of legitimacy while orchestrating a series of scams. Patel remarked, “The fraud is mind-boggling. We’re talking about tens of millions of dollars in fraud and theft across a multi-year investigation.”
Specific allegations against Terry Rozier include claims that he provided insider information to his contacts, who then used this information for betting purposes. In a notable instance from March 2023, Rozier allegedly informed his contacts that he would leave a game early due to an injury. This prompted them to bet against his performance, showcasing how insider knowledge can be exploited for financial gain.
Chauncy Billups, on the other hand, is implicated in the poker game rigging investigation. Prosecutors have identified several New York-based crime families involved in these schemes, highlighting a troubling nexus between organized crime and professional sports.
Some individuals face charges in both investigations, including Damon Jones, a former Cleveland Cavaliers player and assistant coach. This overlap raises further questions about the extent of corruption within the league and the potential for a broader fallout.
