Mohammed Abdul-Salam, Director General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), participated in the African Lotteries Association (ALA) 2025 end-of-year review meeting held in Accra on December 18. Abdul-Salam also serves as the Vice President of the ALA, an association that promotes best practices and collaboration among national lottery bodies across Africa.

The ALA acts as a governing body for lotteries on the continent, emphasizing the importance of a common platform for sharing best practices and governance protocols related to lottery operations. Speaking on the sidelines of the meeting, Abdul-Salam highlighted that the event gathered ALA board members to review 2025 activities and plan for operational efforts in the upcoming year, 2026.

He noted that the meeting provided ALA officials with an opportunity to discuss next year’s calendar events, resulting in impactful decisions. One of the successes achieved this year was the training of member countries in cybersecurity and blockchain administration for lotteries, conducted in Ivory Coast and Morocco, respectively.

“In 2026, the ALA will offer further training in various aspects of lottery governance and operations, including seminars and executive meetings to address industry matters such as artificial intelligence and responsible gaming,” said Abdul-Salam.

Regarding the NLA’s operational activities, he stated that the Authority plans to implement several reforms in 2026, focusing on lottery governance and the introduction of new products for the gaming public. The NLA’s flagship product, ‘5/90,’ is regarded as a sustainable lottery option that has garnered interest from other African countries.

The ALA, composed of 16 member countries, is led by the President of LONACI (Loterie Nationale de Côte d’Ivoire). The NLA’s strong relationship with the ALA, as a prominent member and key contributor in decision-making regarding lottery governance, underscores the Authority’s leadership role in Africa’s lottery sector.
